UK advertising creative checks: Canva, Cookiebot CMP and Adobe Stock

Review Canva ad inputs, Cookiebot CMP consent reports and Adobe Stock licence limits alongside UK advertising codes and data protection principles.

Build a UK advertising creative review around the production tool, the delivery setup and the asset licence. For a workflow using Canva, Cookiebot CMP and Adobe Stock, keep those decisions separate. Test the proposed campaign rather than treating access to software or an asset as approval to publish.

Connect UK rules to the software workflow

The CAP non-broadcast code covers print and online advertising, sales promotion and direct marketing such as telesales and email. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) enforces the advertising rules. Start the software brief with the intended placement so reviewers know what they are assessing before approving an export.

The UK GDPR's seven key principles are lawfulness, fairness and transparency; purpose limitation; data minimisation; accuracy; storage limitation; integrity and confidentiality; and accountability. Use those principles to frame questions about campaign inputs, reviewer access and retained records. Map the workflow before choosing what to upload to the production tool.

Privacy information must include the lawful basis and purposes for using personal information. The right to object to direct marketing is absolute, including profiling for direct marketing. Connect these duties to the data protection review before testing audience inputs or personalising the creative for a proposed campaign.

Canva: inspect inputs before approving the advert

Canva Grow uses brand visuals and information from a user's website to create ads in seconds. For a trial, specify the website content that may be used and the claims that need review. Do not treat the generated advert as an approved campaign version ready for publication.

Canva Pro offers access to 100M+ premium templates, photos, videos, graphics and music. Treat that access as a starting point for an asset review, not the review's conclusion. Record what was selected, how it will be used and what permission needs checking before the final creative is released.

Use creative versioning checks to connect each proposed export to its inputs and review record. During the trial, replace an image or alter a claim deliberately. Ask the reviewer to identify the change and the decisions that need reopening before that revised version can be approved.

Cookiebot CMP: inspect consent records and delivery

The ICO's What are the exceptions? guidance requires consent for services using storage or access technologies for online advertising. Consent is also required for device fingerprinting used for online advertising purposes. Review the planned delivery setup separately from the image, copy and stock asset selected for the campaign.

Cookiebot CMP provides detailed consent and compliance reports that are automatically generated and updated. It can be used for 14 days without entering credit-card information. During a trial, ask to inspect the reports against a campaign specimen, and record which delivery decisions still need a named reviewer.

Cookiebot CMP Pricing Plans are based on the number of domains and the number of subpages within each domain. Define the trial's website scope before requesting a written quote. Use vendor due diligence questions to request a demonstration of the proposed reports and the intended consent workflow.

Adobe Stock: separate copies, viewers and permitted uses

Adobe Stock's licensing information is intended for individuals, Creative Cloud for teams members and VIP members only. Check that the intended buyer falls within that scope before using it for an asset decision. Record the asset identity and licence alongside the planned campaign placements and intended uses.

Adobe Stock's Standard licence terms permit posting an asset to a website or social-media site with no limitation on views. Keep that permission separate from the copy and viewer limits for other uses. Match each planned placement to the relevant permission before approving the campaign for release.

Planned useLicence permission or restrictionReview action
Copies in all mediaThe Standard licence permits up to 500,000 copies, including product packaging, printed marketing materials, digital documents or software.Record the intended reproduction count.
Email marketing, mobile advertising, or a broadcast or digital programmeThe Standard licence permits these uses when the expected number of viewers is fewer than 500,000.Record the expected viewers for the planned use.
MerchandiseA Standard-licensed asset cannot create merchandise such as a poster, t-shirt or coffee mug that someone would buy specifically because of the asset printed on it.Check why the proposed merchandise would be bought.
Reproduction beyond the restrictionThe Extended licence permits reproducing an asset beyond the 500,000 copy/viewer restriction.Assess the applicable licence before extending the planned use.

Assets labelled "Editorial Use Only" may be used only in relation to newsworthy or public-interest events or topics, typically in newspaper or magazine articles, news blogs or similar media. Flag that label during selection. Connect the rights decision to the commercial contracts review rather than recording only the download.

Text to Image outputs downloaded from the Adobe Stock Generate page may come with IP indemnification. For a proposed generated asset, ask which terms apply and what protection the buyer would receive. Save the answer with the output's identity and intended use before treating that asset as ready for release.

Test and release an identified creative version

Test ad creative compliance software with a campaign specimen that includes the proposed Canva output, selected stock asset and delivery setup. Ask the supplier to demonstrate how reviewers would inspect the relevant records. Distinguish what the software demonstrates from what a person must still decide before publication.

  • Identify the final creative version and intended placement.
  • Record the Canva inputs and claims reviewed.
  • Inspect the proposed delivery technologies and consent records.
  • Attach the Adobe Stock asset identity and applicable licence.
  • Check the intended use against the relevant copy, viewer and use restrictions.
  • Resolve open questions before approving release.

Use a quality checklist for the final export, and assign each decision to a named owner. Reopen the relevant checks when copy, placement, delivery technologies or stock assets change. Keep the revised decision with the revised creative, rather than leaving the approval only in a separate conversation.
